What is the difference?

Lead or contact tracking follows a person; deal tracking follows a sales opportunity. Core Mautic stores contact identity, activity, engagement, and one current lifecycle stage. A deal is a separate record with its own amount, expected close date, owner, pipeline stage, stage-change events, and associated contacts. Use contact tracking to answer who someone is and what they have done. Use deal tracking to answer what may be sold, who is involved, who owns it, and where that opportunity stands.

Mautic's documentation describes contacts as central to its marketing automation model and stages as a way to track contacts through a lifecycle. That makes core Mautic a strong home for person-level history and automation. A deal layer answers a different set of questions; it does not replace the contact record.

When core Mautic is enough

Stay with core Mautic when your workflow is centered on people and their engagement. It is enough when you need to:

  • capture known contacts and tracked visitors;
  • record page visits, form submissions, email activity, and notes;
  • group contacts with segments and run campaigns;
  • score engagement and move a contact through lifecycle stages; or
  • hand a qualified contact to a salesperson without managing a separate opportunity record.

If the question is simply “who should marketing or sales follow up with next?”, a contact record, score, segment, and lifecycle stage may give you the answer.

When you need a deal layer

Add deal tracking when the sales motion has facts that belong to an opportunity rather than to one person. The need usually appears when:

  • one contact can participate in more than one opportunity;
  • one opportunity includes several contacts with different roles;
  • the team needs an amount, expected close date, owner, and status on the opportunity itself; or
  • you need a per-deal record of stage changes instead of treating a contact's lifecycle state as the sale.

Deal Flow adds that record inside Mautic. A deal can carry its own pipeline and stage, amount, expected close date, owner, and associated contacts. Those fields let the team discuss one opportunity without overloading a person's contact record.

How contact stages relate to deal stages

A contact stage and a deal stage answer different questions. The contact stage describes the person's current lifecycle position. The deal stage describes the progress of one opportunity. The same contact might remain sales qualified while one deal is in discovery and another is in proposal.

Current product boundary: as of August 31, 2026, Mautic contact stages and Deal Flow deal stages are separate records; Deal Flow does not synchronize them automatically. Define which record owns each business state, then include any corresponding updates in your team's operating process.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lead tracking and deal tracking in Mautic?

Lead or contact tracking follows a person: identity, activity, engagement, and one current lifecycle stage. Deal tracking follows a sales opportunity: amount, expected close date, owner, pipeline stage, stage-change events, and the contacts involved.

Is core Mautic enough for lead tracking?

Yes, when your process is person-centered. Core Mautic can track contacts, activity, segments, campaigns, scores, and contact lifecycle stages. Add a deal layer when you need to manage a specific opportunity with value, timing, ownership, or several participants.

Can one Mautic contact be associated with multiple deals?

Yes. Deal Flow can associate the same Mautic contact with separate deals, and one deal can include multiple contacts with optional role labels.

Do Mautic contact stages and Deal Flow deal stages sync automatically?

No. As of August 31, 2026, Mautic contact stages and Deal Flow deal stages remain separate records. Define which stage answers the contact-lifecycle question and which answers the opportunity-progress question, then update each according to your team's operating process.
